Knife-wielding man shot by police dies


6:47 p.m. UPDATE: State Police has identified the deceased suspect as 40 year old Shannon Labit of New Iberia.

ORIGINAL: A knife-wielding suspect shot by police who were trying to take him into custody at 620 McDonald Street in New Iberia has died.

Because this is an officer involved shooting, State Police has taken over the investigation.

The suspect’s identity, so far, has not been released.

Accordiing to Master Trooper Brooks David, the incident happened shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday when an Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Deputy shot and killed a man who allegedly stabbed two people hours earlier at a nearby home.

David said his office received a call that a man was holed up in the home on McDonald Street and that Iberia Parish Sheriff Detectives were attemping to allow him to surrender peacefully.

The suspect then reportedly approached the deputy with a knife in hand and was shot, accordiing to David.

He was transported to a local hospital and was pronounced dead a short while later.

The identity of the two stabbing victims have not been released and other circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
