NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) – Community members honored local veterans Monday with a Fourth of July parade and a ceremony in New Iberia.
The ceremony featured a Civil War reenactment, a 21 gun salute and a cannon fire to celebrate the holiday.
“This is a yearly thing and everybody looks forward to it. It’s enjoyable, it’s family oriented. Everybody has a good time,” said Bennie Schovajsa, Iberia Veterans Association President.
Veterans at the ceremony also spoke about why the Fourth of July is so important to them.
“If I had to do it all over I would because I fight for my country. I want everything to be right for my country,” veteran Willis Owen said.
Local area Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts Troops, pageant winners, the New Iberia Fire Department and local politicians all walked in the parade today.
