LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)— Residents in Lafayette will now have a place to go to make safe and secure exchanges.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony kicked off the official safe zone for online and child custody exchange zone this morning at the Lafayette Police Headquarters.

This new safe zone area is monitored 24/7 by police so residents can safely acquire things they buy online from websites like craigslist or drop off children for custody visitations.

District 8 councilwoman Liz Hebert says the idea came after hearing about it from another city and it was completed with little to no cost.

“Safety, 100 percent, safety because, especially in the light of things right now – we’re all concerned about our safety and the safety of our family members. So this just provides us a safe, well monitored place. You can see on the sign there’s a phone number you can call once you arrive and have a police officer come out and stand here with you while you’re doing the exchange. Or you can just let them know that you’re here to do the exchange. So it’s just safety.”
