BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) – Domestic dogs broke into the Baton Rouge zoo and killed three monkeys, officials say.
Zoo officials say at least two dogs made their way into the zoo early Tuesday morning. The monkeys were spot-nosed guenons and they included a 29-year-old female, a 22-year-old male and an 18-year-old male.
“The dogs were never able to enter the actual exhibits, however, they were apparently able to get close enough to the guenons so that as they (the guenons) were reaching out, the dogs were able to grab them and to cause fatal injuries,” said Kaki Heiligenthal, an official with BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo.
The incident was captured on zoo surveillance cameras.
“The Zoo regularly checks the perimeter fence, and it was actually the routine was done less than two weeks ago,” said Heiligenthal. “We are still working to find the ingress point and to capture the offending dogs.”
