(CALCASIEU PARISH, LA) A Lake Charles woman is accused of hitting a 61-year-old man – who had suffered two strokes – over the head several times with his own cane, authorities said.
Karen M. Ortego, 31, of Lake Charles, has been arrested on charges of aggravated second-degree battery, possession and theft of a motor vehicle, theft under $750 and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Westlake police got a call about 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday about a “60-year-old male who was bleeding from the mouth and eye” and his vehicle was stolen, said Westlake Police Chief Chris Wilrye.
When officers arrived, they found the victim sitting on a chair on his front porch.
Officers found that the victim had suffered two strokes and couldn’t “speak or write properly” – and he needed a wooden cane to walk, Wilrye said. “The suspect used the wooden cane like a hammer to strike (the victim) on the head with both hands.”
The victim remains hospitalized.
On Friday, Lake Charles police were investigating a shoplifting complaint on 12th Street and located the victim’s truck. Ortego was arrested soon after.
Ortego was booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center on a $150,000 bond. She was also ordered to stay away from the victim, Wilrye said.
