(The Daily Advertiser) – Residents are expected to speak out Monday against a proposed 600-bed student housing complex to be built along Pinhook Road.
New Orleans-based company Strategic Development Company of Louisiana announced Friday its plans to build The Ridge apartments on 12 acres of property at 1500 Pinhook Rd.
The project goes up for review during the Lafayette Consolidated Government Planning Commission meeting Monday night.
Two weeks ago, a group of Bendel Gardens residents launched a petition against the proposed 311-unit development, which they say will further strain traffic on the congested roadway.
The group plans to present the petition during the commission’s public hearing on the development proposal, resident Becky Hawthorne said.
She said volunteers have been going door-to-door asking residents to support the petition.
The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Planning, Zoning & Codes Auditorium, 220 West Willow St., Building B.
The developer, Strategic Development Company of Louisiana, said it is entering the Lafayette market at a time when additional housing for University of Louisiana at Lafayette students is in high demand.
“Currently, the university only provides 18 percent of the required housing for students on campus,” the company said in the announcement Friday. “With a strong overall enrollment growth trend, notably a 9 percent increase in the size of the freshman class in 2016, the existing demand for safe quality student housing in Lafayette is unquestioned.”
The Ridge will provide gated access to townhome-style units with 576 parking spaces, the company said.
Developers also claim the $40,000,000 complex will bring in an annual local base of $500,000.
The company is expected to have representatives present to answer questions during tonight’s meeting.
