Meth lab found under Walmart parking lot

Lab found in culvert that ran under retail store

AMHERST, N.Y. (USA TODAY)   Police found more than low prices at an Amherst, N.Y., Walmart this week.

They found a meth lab inside of a drainage pipe in the parking lot.

The pipe, wide enough for a 6-foot-tall person to walk through, leading to the meth lab runs underground near the Walmart parking lot exit onSheridan Drive.

Amherst Police “stumbled upon it,” Detective Lieutenant JoAnn DiNoto said.

Inside, they found a makeshift table of wood propped on top of a tire, along with soda bottles filled with solvents used to make meth.

“There was no danger to the community or Walmart shoppers or contaminating water source,” DiNoto said.

Police don’t know how long the underground operation was thriving. Officials are reviewing Walmart surveillance footage to determine suspects. Anyone who has tips, can call the Amherst Police Department in New York at 716-689-1392.

DiNoto could not comment on what police were investigating prior to the discovery.
