LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – The search is over for, Shane Thomas, an inmate who walked away from a transitional housing unit in Lafayette late last night.
After stealing a car during a test drive at a Lafayette car dealership, the inmate was captured around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Dollar General Store in Rayne.
Thomas was picked up by Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s deputies and booked back into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.
Shane Thomas’ criminal history consists of drug and theft charges, according to Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Lt. John Babin.
Lt. Babin said Thomas was being housed at the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Public Safety Complex on Willow St., which is a low-security facility. He walked away from the facility just before midnight.
“They (the inmates) are monitored, but he just took advantage of a situation and got out of our custody without us knowing about it,” Lt. Babin explained.
Once deputies discovered that Thomas was missing, Lt. Babin says a head count was taken to make sure everyone was accounted for.
“A search was immediately done in the facility, around the facility, and the surrounding area,” said Lt. Babin.
Lt. Babin says Thomas is accused of walking into Posh Preowned on Ambassador Caffery Pkwy. Thursday afternoon and going through the paperwork process of a buying a new car, before stealing a 2015 white Ford Mustang.
