Rayne residents relieved after escaped inmate’s capture

RAYNE, La. (KLFY) – Thursday escaped inmate Shane Thomas was captured at a Dollar General in Rayne, and residents say they are relieved to know Thomas is off the streets.

Melinda Benoit lives close to the Dollar General. She was driving home when police made the arrest.

“When I passed I saw the cops here with the car and I said oh they caught him.”

Benoit saw the story first on facebook and said she was immediately concerned for her children.

“I was scared and scared for the kids and everything, and worry about the kids because with all the stuff going around, kidnapping and everything, you want to protect your kids.”

Shane Thomas escaped from a transitional housing unit in Lafayette late Wednesday night. He then stole a 2015 white Mustang from Posh Pre-owned after taking a test drive Thursday afternoon. Thomas even posed for a picture.

Stephanie Sarver lives in Rayne. She said she was shocked to hear what happened.

“Well I had no idea it was even going on and when I heard about it on the news it was kind of shocking to me because it’s so close and we had no idea it was happening.”

Thomas stopped at the Dollar General on Highway 35 in Rayne. He was caught around 3:30 Thursday afternoon.

Benoit said she is relieved to know Thomas is back behind bars.

Thomas is now back in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.
