LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Today local musician Stanley Dural, Jr., known as “Buckwheat Zydeco,” will be laid to rest at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Surrey St. in Lafayette.
Durel passed away on Saturday, September 24th at the age of 68.
Visitation begins this morning at 8:00 a.m. and will run until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m.
Buckwheat Zydeco spent his final moments at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette,
The Lafayette native brought the sounds of southwest Louisiana to the world with his Zydeco music.
The Grammy-nominated accordion player was serious about his music and his appreciation for his fans.
Along with being a fantastic musician, Buckwheat was also a loving father.
His son, Sir Reginald Dural, says his father was the voice of reason in his life, guiding him in tough situations.
“Whenever I had a problem I knew exactly who to go to, you know? And he always guided me in the right direction and that’s one of the things that I’m going to always miss about my father.” said Durel.
“What he showed his public was real. The music, the love, the appreciation, that was all real. And that’s what I would like them to take away. His love was just extremely simple. It just was, it just was.” said Buckwheat’s second son, Stanley Durel, III.
