YOUNGSVILLE, La. (KLFY) – Students across Lafayette Parish had a special treat Thursday.
Students were able to enjoy a fresh meal created and grown by first graders at Green T. Linden Elementary School in Youngsville.
Green T. Linden’s first graders are part of the LSU Agg Initiative where students maintain an on-campus garden.
Last year’s first graders competed in a school garden cook off.
Eight schools participated ranging from high school to elementary.
The students were required to plant and grow their own school garden and then create a healthy meal with the fruits and vegetables they produced.
Green T. Linden first grade teacher Michele Levis’s class is in charge of maintaining the garden.
Her first-grade class won the competition last year and was able to share the winning recipe with the entire parish Thursday.
Levis says the garden has taught students much more than hard work.
“So we grow things throughout the year. We cook them. The class tries them. And it’s amazing to see them trying things like cabbage and broccoli and spinach and things that maybe they wouldn’t have tried before so it’s been amazing to see and they love it,” Levis said.
The lunch included pizza made with cauliflower crust, fresh green salad and a strawberry parfait.
