OPELOUSAS, La (KLFY) – Step-N-Strut trail ride has never had a home of its own. Over the years, organizers have struggled to find a place to even hold the event, and now for the first time in 19 years the festival will not go on.
Step-N-Strut started out as a 2-day trail ride and has evolved into a 4-day festival over the years. As the event continues to grow, organizers have been looking for a bigger facility with a covered pavilion.
“We were looking at Rayne first because of the area,” said Paul Scott, Step-N-Strut Production Designer. “Those negotiations didn’t go well, so we fell back on our second location which was Deridder,” however, Scott says plans to hold the ride in Deridder also fell through.
“It was a confusion with bookings and we really couldn’t change it and time was getting of the essence,” said Scott.
Scott says last year the ride was initially going to be held at the Zydeco Festival Park in Plaisance, but was moved to the Yambilee Building because of rain. He says the problem is finding a facility that can accommodate the 4000 to 4500 people that usually turnout.
“Do you have hard parking? Do you have covered space? Do you have gated entry? Can we do a ride? Is it close to a municipality where our guest can have restaurants and hotels? Those are the biggest things,” said Scott.
Despite the struggle to find a steady home for the trail ride, Scott says so far reaction from attendees has been positive. He says as of Monday morning they’ve already started discussing contract negotiations with several places for next year.
“Right now we’re just going to start visiting and looking at facilities and making sure they can accept what we can put on it,” said Scott.
Scott says they expect to release the location and ticket dates for next year’s festival sometime early spring.
