LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Lafayette Fire crews responded to a house fire in the 500 block of E. Demanade Street at 10:35 p.m. Wednesday evening.
Lafayette Fire spokesman Alton Trahan tells News 10 the fire was reported by a neighbor who smelled smoke in the neighborhood.
That neighbor discovered the home fully involved.
Trahan says once firefighters arrived, the flames were venting through the roof and the back of the house.
Crews were able to get the fire under control within 20 minutes.
The interior of the house and the roof sustained heavy fire damage.
According to Trahan, the home owner, Executive Director of the Lafayette Convention and Visitors Commission Ben Berthelot, and his family were not staying in the home at the time due to water damage from the August flood and the home was under construction.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
