Victim identified in St. Martinville shooting

ST. MARTINVILLE, La. (KLFY) – Police Chief Calder Hebert has identified the victim in last night’s shooting as 30-year-old Kendrick “Monkey” Jones.

Jones was found unresponsive in a truck at the corner of Buchanan and Resweber Streets, according to investigators.

Witnesses tell News 10 the victim was shot while sitting in his truck here on Longfellow Court.

He then sped off and ran over this fence across the street before he possibly lost consciousness and crashed into a ditch just around the corner at the intersection of Buchanan and Resweber Street.

St. Martinville police responded to call of shots fired on Longfellow Court  around 8:45 Wednesday night.

While officers raced to the shooting, they got another call of a car crash a couple blocks away from the crime scene.

“Unfortunately we found the victim of the shooting in that vehicle,” Police Chief Calder Hebert said.

Jones was found dead inside his truck.

Neighbors heard the commotion but declined have their faces shown in fear of retaliation.

“All of a sudden we hear two shots then about a 1 second pause, {pow pow, then pow pow pow pow} then we heard four more shots and then we just hear a big crash,” the witness said.

It was an active scene Wednesday night, all that was left Thursday morning was crime tape and debris.

Detectives have been interviewing witnesses, and St. Martinville Police Chief Calder Hebert says they’re making progress:

“We have a couple persons of interests there we’re talking to. Or course, we always want the public’s help on this because they’re out there and we are not, we have to respond. Again, whoever did this we want to put them to justice.”

Throughout the day, friends and family came to the scene to pay respects, one of them even placed this floral cross in the front yard, in memory of the victim.

This investigation is still active.

St. Martinville police are urging anyone with information to give them a call at (337) 394-3001.
