LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Firefighters responded to a heavy blaze at Charlies Seafood Restaurant just before midnight.
Smoke covered the building and surrounding areas and firefighters encountered heavy flames in the back of the business..
“When I look at the building I think ‘Oh my God, everything’ I can not believe that’s true,” said owner Cathy Lyn
Now all that remains of the family business is rubble.
“You know, I don’t know how to explain my feelings now. I just think that this is a bad dream for me. I can not believe that’s true, you know? We working really hard, we do everything, but I don’t know why I’m so, I don’t know.”
While the cause of the fire is unknown, investigators determined it originated in a food prep room next to the kitchen.
Brad Randall lives down the street and eats at the restaurant at least twice a week.
“Obviously it’s a bad situation for the owners itself, it’s going to hurt their business,” said Randall, “It’s going to hurt the community and the area cause they eat here a lot.”
Cathy’s daughter Rita admits the family has had a tough year but she’s hopeful to see what next year will bring.
“We hope everything’s going to be okay this year like for the rest of the year since the flood and everything it’s just a lot of bad things happening this year,” said Rita, “And we hope next year will be new, whole new year and everything will just be better.””
Cathy is hopeful that they can rebuild and open within the next six months.
