NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) – Two homicides in two days have Iberia Parish sheriff’s deputies working overtime to solve these shootings.
The most recent shooting happened this morning in the 600 block of Field Street in New Iberia.
Frederick Lopez lives on Field Street where the shooting happened, he says he and his wife were lying in bed after 1 a.m. when they heard shots.
“It was very close to the house so me and my wife both got on the floor,” Lopez said.
It was even closer than he thought. Lopez later learned the shooting happened in his driveway after seeing blood in his front and backyard.
Several residents spoke up about the multiple shootings in their community but would not speak on camera; calling their decision “preservation of life.”
“If we open up and speak out, you’ll be covering my death tomorrow. I’ma die!” one resident told News 10.
Two homicides about 28 hours apart and within a hundred yards of each other, Captain Wendell Raborn with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office says there’s a possibility of a connection.
“Our investigators are looking into that; to see if they are related in anyway. We don’t know if it is retaliation, we don’t know if it is a personal matter, we’re looking into all the aspects of it,” Raborn explained.
Captain Raborn is asking the community to call the sheriff’s office if they have any information on either of the two homicides.
