JENA, La. (KLFY)—Investigators have charged a month in the death of her 6-year-old daughter who died in a fire early Wednesday, according to the State Fire Marshal.
Wendy Leian Blasingame, 29, was booked into the La Salle Parish Jail for one count of negligent homicide.
A news release stated that the investigation began into the circumstances surrounding the death of the 6-year-old after firefighters responded to a report of a camper trailer fire just after 4 a.m. on Oct. 26.
Firefighters said after extinguishing the fire, the body of Ayla Breeland was discovered within the burned remnants of the camper which had been destroyed by the fire.
Authorities said that Blasingame was absent from the scene and did not return until hours after the fire was extinguished. Authorities said Blasingame appeared in a state of intoxication.
It is unclear how long the child had been left unattended.
Investigators said the La Salle Parish Coroner performed an autopsy on Oct. 27. The results are pending.
According to a news release, fire investigators determined that the fire originated within the camper trailer near a mattress that was positioned on the floor where the victim’s body was found. In that area, investigators discovered a number of illegally energized electrical wires.
Investigators also said an electric space heater had been connected to the wiring and was placed near where the child slept.
