(The Daily Advertiser) – More Lafayette Parish voters cast early ballots in the 2016 presidential election than in the last two presidential elections.

Although voters waited in a long line Tuesday to vote early, Lafayette Parish Registrar of Voters Charlene Meaux Menard told The Daily Advertiser that, as of Monday, 13,927 ballots had been cast.

About 9 percent of the parish’s 155,135 registered voters cast early ballots in the race.

That number will go up when Tuesday’s voters are counted and mail-in ballots are collected.

In the 2012 presidential race, 10,790 people in Lafayette Parish voted early, not counting mail-in ballots. In 2008, it was 9,891.

Voters have reported long waits — sometimes more than an hour — to vote early in Lafayette Parish. Menard said the line Tuesday was outside the 1010 Lafayette St. building where the registrar’s office is located.

“This is remarkable,” Menard said. “The last time I saw this I wasn’t the registrar and it was a gubernatorial election.”

Early voting statewide shattered prior records, according to multiple media outlets. Early voting ended Tuesday.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. until 8 pm. Nov. 8. Lines may be long and the ballot is long, so voters are advised to bring a cheat sheet into the voting booth to help them cast their ballot quickly.
