LSU releases letter to parents explaining how they can cover the TOPS shortfalls

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) – LSU has released a letter to parents detailing how much money they can expect for their students from the TOPS program for the Spring 2017 semester.

While TOPS previously paid for LSU tuition in full, the current amount of funding will be $1,559.76, which is $3,819.24 less than current tuition and fee amounts. Back in July, Governor John Bel Edwards signed an amendment into law as part of the supplemental state budget, which cut the amount of TOPS money to cover tuition from 100 percent to an estimated 42 percent. The precise amount of tuition that TOPS will cover for the Spring semester now appears to be 41.8 percent.

The university is offering several options to families to help mitigate this difference in funding, including a deferred payment option ($15 service fee will be waived for TOPS eligible students who enroll in a deferred payment plan), student loans, and parent loans.
