NOLA Police: 10 shot, 1 dead in French Quarter shooting, 2 survivors from Acadiana area

NEW ORLEANS (AP) – New Orleans Police say one man is dead and nine others injured following a shooting in the French Quarter. Police Superintendent Michael Harrison said during a news conference that officers responded about 1:30 a.m. Sunday to the shooting at the intersection of Iberville and Bourbon streets.

Harrison said the shooting victims whose ages ranged from 20 to 37 included two females and eight males. One male victim died at a hospital. Harrison said police do not know what motivated the shooting, but one male victim was among two men arrested on firearms charges.

Harrison said the shooting happened despite an increased police presence for the Bayou Classic football game Saturday night between Southern and Grambling universities.

The families of two victims who live in the Acadiana area have confirmed with KLFY that 20 year old Brittany Ben of Lafayette was shot three times in the chest area, and twice in her arm.

They say 21 year old Deion Ben of Scott was shot in the groin and that the bullet rested in his pelvic area.

The family says Brittany has been released from the hospital and will seek care in the Lafayette area, however her cousin Deion remains in a NOLA hospital with internal bleeding.

New Orleans Police Chief Mike Harrison has identified the deceased as 25 year old Demontrius Tolliver of Baton Rouge.

He says of the 9 other victims, 5 have been released from the hospital and 4 are still being treated.

No suspects have been arrested, however Harrison did note that the suspects were not from the New Orleans area.

An investigation is ongoing.
