LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – After just six months of construction, the Cajundome is finally opening its doors.
Cajundome Director Greg Davis said seeing the finished project is overwhelming, making the Cajundome a competitive facility for business.
“I think it makes us competitive with some of the best arenas out there and it makes us stand apart.”
With all black seats, LED lighting and concessions are a few of the many improvements.
“Food is an important part of our culture and we could never meet that challenge. With the increased space and equipment and with having an executive chef in concessions we will meet that challenge now,” said Davis.
Operations Director Phill Ashurst said these changes have made for a more efficient facility.
“We used to have over 500 fixtures in the arena, we’re down to about 140 fixtures, using one-fifth the electricity. Reduce the cost is whatI’mm always trying to do. The old seats used to cost us between 75-100 thousand dollars to operate, now that goes away.”
And another added bonus, you can find Ragin’ Cajun graphics and paintings on nearly every wall, making the Cajundome feel more like home to the Cajuns.
“This is the home of UL basketball so we thought that the design, the graphics, the configuration should all have that as a focus.”
The Ragin’ Cajuns basketball team will play in the new arena Thursday.
This will be the first official event in the renovated Cajundome.
