NEW ORLEANS — An Uber driver picking up a passenger opened fire on his would-be carjacker stopping the robbery, but an employee at a nearby hotel was wounded by a stray bullet.
According to a preliminary report from NOPD, an Uber driver picked up a passenger at a nearby hotel around 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Then, while stopped at the red light at the intersection of North Rampart and Canal Street, an armed man approached and ordered the Uber driver and his passenger out of the vehicle.
Police say as the driver was getting out, he grabbed a gun from the door and opened fire on the armed robber.
A man, identified by police as a bellman at a nearby hotel, was struck in the hand by a stray bullet.
It is unclear if the armed robber ever fired his weapon or who shot the bellman.
The armed robber, later identified as 28-year-old Andre Satcher, was arrested by NOPD and has been booked with several traffic violations as well as carjacking, armed robbery with a firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon and negligent injuring.
