Food donations down in St. Landry Parish

ST. LANDRY PARISH, La (KLFY) – The Food For Families food drive, which was held two weeks ago, was aimed to impact six area food pantries in dire need of food this holiday season.

Just recently, the food pantry at the St. Landry Parish Community Action Agency had only one completely stocked shelf and after the food drive the entire room is now filled with much more food, thanks to your generous donations.

“All we had left in here was can goods before we actually filled it up,” said Kirsten Thomas, Executive Director of the St. Landry Parish Community Action Agency, and now Thomas says the organization is set for the next couple of months.

“This is tremendous because now we have a variety we’ll be able to give the clients that come in for the food items,” said Thomas.

Thomas says normally the shelves are restocked about twice a year for the 20 or so families that they serve each month.

“We typically service families that are low income or clients that are disabled,” said Thomas.

Although most food pantry recipients are happy with the outcome, the St. Landry-Evangeline United Way says the results were not as great as they have been in the past.

“We received 4 1/2 tons,” said Susan Fisher, Special Projects Coordinator for the St. Landry-Evangeline United Way. “In the past we’ve received as much as 10, as much as 8, last year we received 6, so we do find that it’s going down a little bit every year.”

Fisher says normally they’re able to provide each food bank with at least one ton of food.

“This year we didn’t,” said Fisher. “We split that 4 1/2 tons between six food banks.”

Fisher says her guess is because people give so much all year long, and most notably quite a bit during the historic flood, however, she says that makes the need even more greater.

“Because of the flood we still have people not living in their homes and there are a lot of people that are in need this Christmas season,” said Fisher.

If you would like to continue helping stock the food pantry shelves for the needy. You can drop off your food donations at the St. Landry-Evangeline United Way.
