NEW ORLEANS, La. (KLFY)- The removal of confederate monuments in the crescent city continued this morning when masked workers took down the Jefferson Davis monument. Protesters who wanted to see the statues stand gathered to speak out about the lack of community involvement in the decision to remove the monuments.

“Why wouldn’t they just let the people speak? That’s what democracy is, isn’t that what we all are Americans for?” Kenneth Sutton, a local Confederate enthusiast asked.

Sutton believes that removing the monuments takes away a piece of American culture.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Malcolm Suber, of Take ‘em Down NOLA believes that the removal of the Jefferson Davis statue is only a small piece of a much larger plan.

“To remove from public spaces all statues to white supremacy, all the street names to white supremacy and all schools to white supremacy,” Suber said.

Suber helped to establish Take ‘em Down NOLA two years ago in the footsteps of South Carolina removing the confederate flag from statehouse grounds.

The removal of the Jefferson Davis monument is the second of four monuments approved by the mayor and city council to be removed around the city.
