SUNSET, La. (KLFY) – Here in Acadiana, many of our cities take pride in one specific thing.
In Breaux Bridge it’s Crawfish…
In Crowley it’s rice…
In Rayne it’s Frogs…
Well in sunset, it’s Rubboards…
“Sunset is the rubboard capital of the world,” Tee Don Landry of Key of Z Rubboards said.
The title became official in 2014.
Tony Davoren, musician and Sunset resident said: “Growing up in Ireland we all knew where the rubboard came from. It’s iconic for the state of Louisiana.”
And it’s because of the work being done by Landry.
Sunset resident and rubboard enthusiast Dori Janise said: “It’s to honor Tee-Don and also our music.”
Landry’s father made the first shoulder strap rubboard in Port Arthur Texas in the 1940s.
Landry started making rubboards full time in 1995; since then he’s sold more than three thousand rubboards all over the world.
“People love them; its Louisiana culture and history,” Landry said.
“We are so fortunate to have him. He is going to put Sunset on the map,” Janise said.
“I know it’s special to people I know it’s special to me I love what I do this is what I do this is what I do and I love it,” Landry said.
The rubboard is one of four instruments invented in the United States. That’s according to Billy gibbons from ZZ Top.
