LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)- UPDATE: Authorities are investigating a structure fire at 109 Kettering Circle that killed a toddler this morning.
At 7:53 a.m., Judice, Scott, Milton, and Lafayette firefighters responded to a report of a house fire. Thirteen fire trucks responded to the scene to assist in extinguishing the fire.
The witness called 911 and said a child was inside the burning building.
When firefighters arrived, heavy flames were coming from the dwelling. The owners were outside when firefighters arrived.
They informed firefighters that their young child was still inside.
Firefighters made entry to conduct a search of the home, but initial searches were unsuccessful.
Firefighters battled the blaze for approximately thirty minutes before getting the fire under control.
Once the fire was brought under control, additional searches were conducted. The fire victim was found in a bedroom.
The parents informed investigators that the 2-year-old boy toddler was watching television.
The father exited the bedroom and noticed heavy smoke in the living room.
He alerted his wife and infant child, but could not find the toddler.
They searched the home, but the smoke and flames became too intense forcing them to leave the building.
All three surviving occupants were transported to a local hospital to be evaluated due to various injuries and smoke inhalation.
The name of the victim and the parents will be released at a later time.
Lafayette fire investigators determined that the fire originated on the sofa in the living room.
The investigation into the heat source continues. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
